6 Thanksgiving Foods That Are Good for Your Teeth
November 27, 2024
Protecting your teeth from seasonal treats can sometimes be a challenge. From cotton candy in the summer to your Halloween haul in the fall, each time of year has its own dangerously delicious indulgences ready to wreck your oral health. But not all foods are bad for you! This Thanksgiving, fill your plate with a helping of these healthy holiday indulgences that are actually good for your teeth and gums!
Turkey
Turkey is the heart of many a Thanksgiving feast, and for good reason! Not only is it lean, but it’s full of important nutrients like niacin, vitamin B12, zinc, and vitamin B6, all of which are beneficial to your teeth and bones!
Vegetables
Vegetables are good and good for you, too. No matter how you prepare them, they’re an excellent source of vitamins and minerals. When served raw, crunchy varieties can even help clean your teeth when you chew, something that could be very helpful during those epic holiday dinners.
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes aren’t just full of flavor, they’re great for your gums. This is due to their high levels of vitamin A and C. But buyers beware: if you’re preparing them candied or with marshmallows, this can be harmful to your teeth, so be sure to drink lots of water when you enjoy them.
Nuts and Cheese
Cheese is an excellent source of calcium which is good for your teeth and bones. Nuts can boost your saliva production, which can help keep the acid levels in your mouth low while it washes away dangerous debris that could cause cavities.
Dental Dangers
Unfortunately, while there’s plenty of food to be thankful for, there are some treats that are terrible for your teeth. There’s no need to pass on these items entirely; just be sure to enjoy them in moderation, and brush and floss your teeth well when you’re done. These foods include:
- Cranberry sauce
- Mashed potatoes
- Pie
- Alcohol
- Rolls
- Stuffing
Remember, Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for the many wonderful things life has to offer, including your celebratory feast. But don’t neglect your oral health just because it’s a special occasion. Making smart choices will help keep your teeth and gums healthy all year long!
